What this role is all about:
Vitality is seeking an Intern Database Engineer to join its Database Administration team. This role provides an excellent foundation for an aspiring technology professional looking to build a career in database engineering, cloud technologies, and data platforms. Working alongside experienced Database Engineers and Data Engineers, the successful candidate will gain hands-on exposure to enterprise-scale database environments, supporting critical systems across AWS and Google Cloud while developing practical skills in database administration, SQL optimisation, troubleshooting, deployments, and operational support. This internship is ideally suited to a highly motivated individual with a passion for technology, a strong problem-solving mindset, and a genuine desire to learn and grow within a fast-paced, data-driven environment.
Key Actions
- Support the administration and maintenance of databases in cloud environments including AWS and Google Cloud
- Assist with database health checks and query optimisation activities to improve performance and reliability
- Support the investigation and resolution of database-related issues alongside senior team members
- Help implement database changes, deployments, patches and version upgrades
- Assist in maintaining database standards, policies and operational procedures
- Provide support across development, testing and production database environments
- Work closely with Database Engineers and Data Engineers on day-to-day database activities
- Monitor database performance and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
- Assist development teams with database and SQL-related queries and support requests
What do you need to thrive?
- Completed Degree/Diploma qualification
- Qualification in Information Technology, Computer Science or Informatics would be advantageous
- 0-1 year of experience
- Familiarity with PostgreSQL or Oracle databases
- Basic SQL knowledge
- Strong willingness to learn new technologies and technical concepts
- Ability to solve problems and think logically
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced technical environment
- Adaptability when working within complex systems and environments
